Employment disputes and counseling
The focus of my practice is employment law. I have handled numerous employment lawsuits and other disputes. I handle claims regarding harassment, hostile work environment, discrimination, retaliation, and wrongful termination, whether the claim is based on sex, gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, pregnancy, or disability. I also handle a range of other employment claims, including family and medical leave, disability accommodations, injured worker discrimination, wage and hour, and whistleblower. If litigation is necessary, my clients can rest assured I am ready to fight for them.
My experience includes administrative complaints to the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries (BOLI), the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), and the Washington Human Rights Commission (HRC).
I also provide employment law advice. I regularly assist clients with severance negotiations and review of separation agreements. I am also available for assistance preparing or updating employment handbooks and policies. I can provide advice on options to handle difficult workplace situations, where there is a risk it may turn into a larger dispute.
I work with small employers on creative and proactive strategies, and offer tailored solutions that give them the incentive to involve me early on, when I can be most effective. My experience handling situations that have reached the point of litigation gives me insight to help clients avoid litigation when possible.
I help clients navigate the unemployment process, providing representation in hearings or appeals to the Employment Appeals Board. I offer cost-effective options for employees to help make these services worthwhile.
I have handled a variety of civil rights matters. For example, I assist clients who have experienced discrimination, such as racial profiling, by a business or other place of public accommodation. I also represent individuals in disability accommodations claims against places of public accommodations.
I can also help advise your small business on how to avoid problems. For example, many small business owners do not realize how broad the protections of the public accommodations laws are. Understanding the unique issues involved in these types of claims can help avoid some of the pitfalls.
Business disputes and advice
I have experience prosecuting and defending a variety of business-related civil claims, including breach of contract, intentional interference with economic relations, conversion, defamation, and the Uniform Trade Practices Act. I am also available for review of or drafting assistance with various types of contracts, to help avoid business disputes in the first place. Again, my litigation experience helps me anticipate potential problems down the road.
